But, thoroughly enjoyed it, couldn't put it down towards the end, so, I'll call it a goodun! When a body is found in a New York construction site detective Vivien Light is put on the case. The only things found near the body is a photo of two men in army gear and a man holding a cat with three legs. While Vivien with the help of discraced former press reporter Russell Wade investigate the city is rocked by an explosion of a twenty story building.
They soon realise that extablishing the identity of the body and those in the photos will help to find who is blowing up the cities buildings When a body is found in a New York construction site detective Vivien Light is put on the case.
They soon realise that extablishing the identity of the body and those in the photos will help to find who is blowing up the cities buildings and try to prevent futher death and destruction.
Vivien while trying to do her job is facing trying personal demons with a sick sister and troubled niece. Russell has his own troubles being seen as failure in his parents eyes.
But these two know thay have limited time to stop more deaths and prevent all out panic throughout the city. It is establised that one of the men in the photo found by the body in the construction site is a Vietnam vet who was killed in action.
The truth though will be both tragic and will cause a hate that will manifest itself through generations and one that wants to show who is in control. For the most part Giorgio Faletti's second Novel is an entertaining read that kept me reading well into the nights.
The questions kept coming like who is the one who is blowing up the buildings? Unfortuently there were a few negatives like the ending wich for me was abit confusing and abit corny with the relationship between Vivien and Russell while the pacing was at times inconsistant.
But for the most part this was a good crime read that will keep you thinking to the very end. Jan 19, Jeanet rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites , thriller. The main story is the classic tale about finding the bad guy and stop him in time to save everyone from dying under cruel circumstances, but it's also about finding peace with whom you are, what you are.
The plot of the book worked very well in my mind and although I was closer then I thought to fig 'Io sono Dio ' I am God is a beautifully written, fast paced story about how one man looses himself in Vietnam and returns to the States full of hatred to the government that betrayed him so badly. The plot of the book worked very well in my mind and although I was closer then I thought to figure out who the bad guy was, I was surprised as the horrible truth were revealed at the end. I'm not a huge crime novels fan but I am a Faletti fan.
His way with words intoxicate me to a point where I find myself vanishing into a rainbow of words that together fills my heart with promises of love and a perfect world - only to be brought back a moment later with the cruel events that our non-perfect world at times makes us deal with.
Most descriptive writers have a tendency to get lost in the details. The attention they give every new thing mentioned overshadows the plot and for some it goes so bad that their novels ends up as nothing more then printed pages filled with words.
It takes more then that to write a book. Although Faletti is a descriptive writer and it is one of the reasons I love him so, he knows when to dwell and when to move on and perhaps more importantly, he knows how to say a lot in just a few words. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who would enjoy a good thriller but also anyone that enjoys books from a master of words. Crime fiction is not my favourite genre, but when it is done well, I really do enjoy it.
Emily and Jamie from Constable Robinson publishers regularly feed my reading needs, sending me a wide assortment of their titles to try. When I Am God by Giorgio Faletti dropped through the letterbox, I really wasn't sure what to think - the cover alone is enough to scare the pants off you and the blurb on the back is intriguing.
So, a couple of days later, I finally raise my head from the pages, and it reall Crime fiction is not my favourite genre, but when it is done well, I really do enjoy it. So, a couple of days later, I finally raise my head from the pages, and it really has been the most fabulous read, to use a well-worn phrase; 'I really couldn't put it down'.
This is a very cleverly written novel, with a wide cast of characters who at first seem to have nothing whatsoever to link them, as the story unfolds, these characters become more and more entwined within this gripping story. There is a serial killer on the loose. A serial killer with a difference - the police are aware that there are buildings in New York city that have mines in their foundations - they were put there at the time of construction and someone, somewhere is making sure that they are detonated.
Vivian Light is the policewoman in charge of the investigation and the chase to find the killer and what follows is a superbly crafted thriller with red-herrings, twists and unexpected events galore - keeping the interest of the reader throughout the story.
An unpredictable story line, an astounding ending and some really realistic characters - added to a sense of tension that is almost unbearable towards the end, this novel is a real triumph of a thriller. This book is full of unexpected plot twists and turns. Till the end you cannot know who sets the bombs to blow. Detective is following all those leads towards killer but the real "God" stays hidden till the end.
Faletti keeps his readers tense till last few pages of the book. You cannot imagine how will it all solve and who is the killer.
None of the human beings bustling around me has any idea when that eight minutes will begin. But I do. I find a button and press it gently.
A moment or a thousand years later, the explosion is like thunder without a storm. Then the screams and the dust This is my power. This is my duty. This is my will. I am God.
Love in its many forms plus terror, horror and revenge are woven into an excellent novel with plenty of background stories to keep the pages turning. This was an amazing read for me.
Unfortunately I'm giving it 4 stars just because the start was just TOO slow, I almost quit reading it. But after like pages it started to get really really good. I Am God The Vietnam war, the Catholic church, misled teenagers, a top-notch psychopath and the post- September 11 setting already are an ambitious mix, but Faletti does not stop there. Not to forget the Kosovo conflict, a three-legged black cat and a dose of ventriloquism.
As I am unable to read the original version, I am giving this the benefit of the doubt. There's a few interesting ideas, red herrings and occasional humour. It's a boilerplate thriller that makes an easy beach, train or sickbed read. Having spent so much time in Urban Fantasy, I feel nearly immune to the clutches of other genres lately. I Am God was a shift from the usual and back into fairly straight-forward thriller material. It was refreshing. No teenage girl-power, no deus ex machina , no vampires or werewolves.
Just sociopaths and the people in blue who chase them. Part of the thrill—and frustration—of reading I Am God was the way in which unfolded.
