The paper surveys interactions between complex and functional-analytic methods in the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theory. For instance, the behavior of the derivative of a bounded holomorphic function led to abstract versions of the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya Theorem. Recent trends in the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theory are based on the concept of associated differential operators. Since an evolution operator may posses several associated operators, initial data may be decomposed into components belonging to different associated spaces.

Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem

In mathematics , the Cauchy—Kowalevski theorem also written as the Cauchy—Kovalevskaya theorem is the main local existence and uniqueness theorem for analytic partial differential equations associated with Cauchy initial value problems. This theorem is about the existence of solutions to a system of m differential equations in n dimensions when the coefficients are analytic functions. The theorem and its proof are valid for analytic functions of either real or complex variables. Then there is a neighbourhood of 0 in W on which the quasilinear Cauchy problem.

Quasi-Linear Equations and the Cauchy—Kowalewski Theorem

A theorem stating that the Cauchy problem has a unique analytic solution locally if the functions occurring in the differential equation or system of differential equations and all the initial data, together with the non-characteristic initial surface, are analytic. Generally speaking, the Cauchy—Kovalevskaya theorem does not exclude the possibility of the Cauchy problem having non-analytic solutions in addition to the analytic solution. For example, this is the case when the system 1 is of elliptic type. If the initial data are non-analytic, the Cauchy problem 1 , 2 may become meaningless unless attention is confined to hyperbolic systems 1. For a broad class of equations, the Cauchy—Kovalevskaya theorem may be generalized to the case in which the initial manifold is characteristic at every point see [1] , [2]. In that case the initial functions cannot be prescribed at will; they must satisfy certain conditions, dictated by the differential equation.
