This export process uses the default accounts created in QuickBooks Desktop under the Legal Service set up. If you have re-named those accounts or modified their status you will need to re-map the exports in order for QuickBooks to know where the data is supposed to be going.
The re-mapping instructions can be found here, under Advanced Settings. Backup your QuickBooks files before starting this process. If you do not perform the backup you will NOT be able to undo this action if you discover that you missed an item in the date range or included an incorrect transaction in your data.
You will be stuck with it. You will see in this example that Seth's information was brought into QuickBooks. Your Operating account will include your invoice payment receipt activity. To export these account transactions from Clio, go to the Accounts tab and click Export transations. Next, choose the appropriate account, your date range and the IIF format:.
To View your import, you need to go into the Customer center and choose the Transactions tab. QuickBooks Desktop will attempt to link payments to the appropriate invoices but you will be required to confirm that link.
Once you save and close QuickBooks it will formally link those two transactions, applying payment to the invoice:. This is why we also suggest that you backup your QuickBooks information prior to an import as there is no rollback function within QuickBooks Desktop.

QuickBooks Desktop: Instructions on Exporting Invoices and Transactions from Clio to QuickBooks
Generally I do an estimate as you suggested and convert it in to an invoice but split over a few invoices. Each invoice has a different description and like to do them all at once paper work day and send them when needed. I have them future dated but it gets very cluttered especially if I miscalculated the future date and they becomes overdue and also stuffs up reports. You'll want to create an invoice and save it as a PDF. Note : This will save the invoice in the customer transaction list, but you can delete it after. Once done, close the Print preview window.
