With approved projects in different research areas, such as health, biotechnology, nanotechnology and energy, the Program aims to mobilize and aggregate in networks the best research groups in frontier areas of science and in strategic areas for the sustainable development of the country, as described in PACTI.
Altogether 69 Brazilian authors have signed papers with data from Gemini to date. In SOAR, scientific production is still incipient.
This telescope began its operation five years after the Gemini. Perhaps more important at this time is that the SOAR Telescope has enabled Brazilian Astronomy to establish a world class instrumentation program.
Two instruments have been built and a third is under construction. In terms of human resource training, the INCTA allocated the first postgraduate scholarships for Masters, restricted to emerging groups.
Several contacts and meetings were held between the sub-group with special responsibility and the various projects. Brazilian researchers have participated in international events in the IVOA. INCTA also formed a group on Education, with the goal of designing a course in astronomy for science teachers of primary and secondary schools throughout Brazil. Several study visits were made in order to understand the demand and propose partnerships.

One of the main lines of research of the Institute refers to the atherogenic characteristics of human lipoproteins, which are responsible for the transport of cholesterol in the organism. Summary of achievements and perspectives a We have used physical and immunological methods to demonstrate the association between chronic periodontitis and indicators of risk of cardiovascular diseases.
We have identified some of the non-linear optical characteristics of native and oxidized forms of the low-density lipoprotein LDL , and established a protocol to quantify the atherogenic LDL by a physical method; b We have determined the characteristics of the emission spectrum of Europium-Tetracycline complexes in the presence. Using the results of this investigation, we have been able to propose new protocols for the quantitative analysis of LDL in the blood; c We have observed that a certain amount of statin taken by patients with a large risk of coronary disease has acted to decrease the concentration of LDL with atherogenic characteristics in the blood; d We have carried out in vitro studies of the internalization of iron oxide nanoparticles in mesenchymal stem cells to be used in therapeutic processes.
We have been able to synthesize biocompatible ferrofluids on the basis of nanoparticles of iron oxides with several types of coatings; e We have investigated some elements of the innate and adaptative immune response of models in acute renal lesions in experimental animals and in transplanted patients.
The results so far indicate that receptors of the innate immunity are directly involved in the acute renal lesion and have some influence in the expression of the cytoprotector molecules; f We have use defocus microscopy to measure fluctuations in red blood cells, macrophages, cardiomicytes, and stem cells of birds, with access to some mechanical properties of these cells; g We have investigated new characteristics of liquid crystals, micelle systems and lipid membranes.
As a perspective of future interdisciplinary work, we plan to further investigate the atherogenic characteristics of LDL, as well as the synthesis and some applications of magnetic colloids. In compression technologies, Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD has reached the maturity required for use as a design tool. The aim of CFD is to predict fluid flow and heat transfer in a specific design, allowing a more cost effective component analysis in comparison with experimental methods.
In this research line, three-dimensional numerical models for the analysis of different types of compressors are developed, taking into account the flow in the compression chamber, through valves and suction and discharge mufflers.
In the refrigeration area, we have developed a new calorimeter, specific for micro-compressors. With such an apparatus the condensing and evaporating pressures and also the refrigerant temperature at the crankcase inlet are easily controlled. The compressor performance is calculated by measuring the compressor power and calculating the cooling capacity from the refrigerant mass flow rate and from the pressure and temperature readings at the inlet and outlet of the compressor.
This apparatus is much simpler, easier to use and provides results in a faster rate than that of the conventional hot gas-cycle calorimeters. In the heat exchangers research, we have investigated a novel compact evaporator geometry which is more robust to frost formation than the commonly used plain fins.
The air-side is composed by an arrangement of open-pore cells formed by radial fins whose bases are attached to the tubes and whose tips are connected to peripheral fins. Experiments have been performed to determine the thermal-hydraulic characteristics and a geometry optimization has been proposed based on the entropy generation minimization method.
