ISO specifies test methods for the sampling and quantitative analysis of liquid oil and oil aerosols that can typically be present in compressed air. Two different methods are described, Method A and Method B. Method B is subdivided into two parts to clearly distinguish between procedures for obtaining the quantity of oil for analysis. Method A describes an oil collection technique using inline coalescing filters whereas Method B utilizes sampling discs in a holder from which the collected oil is extracted with a solvent and analysed by infrared spectrometry or gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. Following a periodic review of the existing ISO standard Published , which specifies test methods for the sampling and analysis of liquid oil and oil aerosols, a number of changes have been implemented. These changes will enable more environmentally-friendly solvents to be used as well as making the standard easier to adhere to. The primary reason for the change was to offer a greener solvent, as the existing standard specifies an ozone-depleting substance, which is both difficult to procure and expensive. The secondary change was to introduce gas chromatography with flame ionization detection, while continuing to allow the existing infra-red spectrometry, again with flame ionization detection. The new standard is now up to date with current detection methods and is easier to use and understand with clearer notes and diagrams.
