It is the interconnection between similar or related works of literature that reflect and influence an audience's interpretation of the text. Intertextuality is the relation between texts that are inflicted by means of quotations and allusion. The structure of intertextuality in turn depends on the structure of influence.

The essays assembled in this volume were first presented at a conference held at the University of Birmingham in October The contributors from Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom examine texts by a variety of twentieth-century Spanish poets in terms of their ludic and intertextual possibilities.

The collection also includes four previously unpublished poems by Luis Alberto de Cuenca and Luis Garcia Montero as well as a brief treatise by De Cuenca on his own poetic art. As Arthur Terry points out in his prologue, intertextuality means different things to different theorists.
