To start off, I had low expectations, as most Commisars I have read in books tend to be essentially the same character, stiff, execution happy, and fairly unhinged, with different names and was worried that Mr. Cain would simply fall into the same cliche. However I could not have been more wrong. The writing has a lot of good humor in it, and Cain is a likeable character. Being a self centered commisar simply trying to make it to retirement but keeps ending up looking like a hero and his reputation then puts him into further harms way adds a lot of humor and you get the feeling that Cain isnt as self centered as he calls himself.

I give it 9 executions out of While maybe not as good as Helsreach you should read that one it more than holds its own ground and is a great stepping stone to kick off the character Ciaphas Cain. Cain is Which is good! Many of the one-dimensional characters are intended to remain background characters, as they are intended to fill one or two roles- and not be a primary part of a story. This is part of what makes Cain so interesting- despite his clear desire to just make it to a desk job and retirement, he finds himself being a hero of the Imperium!

As for Helsreach, it was the first 40k novel I read. I intend to revisit it soon, since I found Grimaldus to be a truly riveting character as well. Cain is amazing in my opinion. Looks like the same problem I have with Gaunts Ghosts.

Very good series, but after 7th book, I rather lost interest. Warhammer 40k Wiki. Sign In Don't have an account? Start a Wiki. Also 15 hours is bad.
