Gomukhasana or Cow Face Pose is an asana. The thighs and calves are placed in such a way that they are wide at one end and tapering at the other. Since the body is placed with legs at the thighs interlocked, the muscles at the quadriceps get flexible and the stretch is felt deep in the hips as these joints are put to work to get the thighs interlocked well. The stretch at the hamstrings help in gaining flexibility and this can be beneficial to athletes in the long run with repeated practice.

Gomukhasana is both a hip opener and a heart opener, so both will help in bringing balance in the body and bring the maximum benefit to the spine keeping it fit. This pose increases blood supply to the legs and arms, making it a useful pose to counteract long periods of sitting in a chair or being hunched over a desk.

The flexion of the knee joint can be useful to heal certain kinds of weakness in the knee provided it is not a ligament tear. This works in opening the limb at the knee while in the pose pushing of the knee towards the ground is worked at. The shoulders and the chest expand thus making the upper spine strong and erect.

The raising of the entire body upwards to get the arms or fingers interlocked behind works with the expansion of the lower abdominal muscles thus making the abdominal organs function well. Deep stretch at the abdominal area also burns the unnecessary fat at the tummy area and tones the entire torso.

Breathing expanding the diaphragm improves the blood circulation at the chest and keeps away from all kinds of allergies. The arms get strong at the biceps and the tricep muscles and bring about some flexibility to the shoulder and the upper arms. The entire spine is stretched bringing in a good flow of prana to the entire body. In the various variations of Gomukhasana, the abdominal muscles are put to work improving digestion or any kind of ailments pertaining to the organs at the abdomen.

Gomukhasana literally means Cow Face Pose, a strange name to be sure, but a wonderful exercise all the same. The Sanskrit go is the etymological root of the English word—want to guess? Look at it straight on from the front: See how the crossed legs look like the lips, the up and down elbows like a pair of ears? The seminal text on the physical practice of yoga, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, contains only 15 asanas. And Gomukhasana makes the cut. The Gheranda Samhita, a 17th-century text, names 32 asanas. Again, Gomukhasana is there, and it's described in this way: "Place both feet on the ground, putting them on either side of the bottom, and hold the body steady.
