This is an excellent way to study any chess opening and at the same time improve your general chess skills and knowledge. The Winawer is a very popular choice amongst French Defence players. It enjoys a sound reputation and reaches positions rich in possibilities for both Black and White.
It offers Black the chance to enter sharp, dynamic lines, such as the notorious Poisoned Pawn Variation, as well as lines which are much more strategic in nature.
In this book, Steve Giddins invites you to join him in studying the French Winawer and its many variations. He examines instructive games, covers the most important lines and provides answers to all the key questions. Everyman Chess, being one of the top 3 publisher of chess books, launched a series called Move by Move some time ago. With it they almost ensure to be of high value for beginners as well as advanced players alike!
In this book he took all the effort to cover the most relevant games to play the opening with confidence! On around pages, the author covers everything that needs to be known in order to play the opening as black and also what to watch out for white!
As the date of the games implies, one could well think about a chronological development of the opening itself! Starting from a real classic, V. Smyslov vs. The opening system itself, the Winawer variation, arises after 1. Nc3 Bb4!? The characteristic move for the Winawer variation! But i doubt it! Fischer True, there are some positional featuers that may seem dubious at first side, but there are also some interesting and dynamic features that play a role!
Let me quote the author, so you can read the opinion of the very man, who wrote this interesting work! But it also has some advantages. Black therefore argues that his own dark-square weaknesses aer not as important as they may seem, because they are hard to attack. At the end of the day, a weakness is only a weakness, if it can be effectively attacked.
Giddins This is the very reason, the Winawer attracts so many chess fans! It simply makes the game more interesting by providing an imbalance that might very well mean doom for the black player! But the dynamic compensation one get when giving up the dark squared bishop, may prove sufficient to generate at least enough counterplay to compensate for the missing bishop! After all, a weakness is only a weakness if it can be exploit!
Conclusion: A fine book that does exactly what it promises! It teaches you an opening that is both, dynamic and well respected among the elite of chess! Recommended for players ranging from up to Lukas Wedrychowski www. Der Lernwert des Buches verbindet sich mit der Intention, warum es geschrieben worden ist.
