Alexander Solzhenitsyn has never shied away from treating difficult topics, and his literary revelations about the nature of Soviet society in the s and s played an important part in discrediting the Soviet regime. This book is the first of three projected volumes in which Solzhenitsyn intends to provide a comprehensive account of the relationship between Russia and its Jewish population since the partition of Poland in first brought a large Jewish population into the Russian Empire.
This volume concentrates on the period between and and is based on a range of secondary sources. Solzhenitsyn makes no claim for his book to be regarded as a piece of original research and the sources on which it is based represent only a part of the material that is available for the study of Russo-Jewish relations.
