ASTM D1816 PDF

Very high levels for furan test results may indicate substantial damage to the insulating system. The calculations that we perform to estimate the condition of the solid insulation by using the furans analysis results is performed in a two-step approach to estimate a DP and calculate insulation life remaining. There are oil processing and transformer maintenance procedures that will significantly change the content of furans. There are three methods for dielectric breakdown voltage testing. The oldest, the flat disk method, is not very sensitive to the presence of moisture and not sensitive to changes in moisture content, unless the percent saturation of the oil is greater than 60 percent. The method is also not sensitive to the aging and oxidation of the oil.

Historical Version s - view previous versions of standard. Work Item s - proposed revisions of this standard. More D The dielectric breakdown voltage serves to indicate the presence of contaminating agents such as water, dirt, cellulosic fibers, or conducting particles in the liquid, one or more of which may be present in significant concentrations when low breakdown voltages are obtained. However, a high dielectric breakdown voltage does not necessarily indicate the absence of all contaminants; it may merely indicate that the concentrations of contaminants that are present in the liquid between the electrodes are not large enough to deleteriously affect the average breakdown voltage of the liquid when tested by this test method see Appendix X1.

This test method is applicable to insulating liquids commonly used in cables, transformers, oil circuit breakers, and similar apparatus as an insulating and cooling medium. Refer to Terminology D for definitions used in this test method.

It has been found to be especially useful in diagnostic and laboratory investigations of the dielectric breakdown strength of insulating liquid in insulating systems. This test method should be used as recommended by professional organization standards such as IEEE C It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Myers, Inc. The D method uses electrodes specified to conform to the design of a VDE standard, Specification The third standard method is IEC Standard , Insulating liquids—Determination of the breakdown voltage at power frequency— Test method. Standard , published by the nonprofit, non-governmental international standards organization, the International Electrotechnical Commission IEC , uses electrodes that are similar geometrically to the VDE electrodes. In all three test methods, the electrodes are mounted in a test cell filled with insulating liquid to ensure that the electrodes are completely covered.
